Entrische Kirche – stalactite cave
Dorfgastein and the Gastein Valley offer a variety of sights and excursion destinations for families. Experience the mystical attraction of a giant mountain cave, feel the life of the medieval miners or hike your way to crystal clear mountain lakes and other excursion destinations in Gastein.
The Entrische Church is a very special natural monument. Over millions of years, stalactites and sinters have formed in the natural karst cave. The Entrische Church (“entrisch” means “uncanny” or “otherworldly” in Gastein dialect) was first mentioned under this name in a document, and according to legend, it used to be used by mountain giants as an apartment. During the time of the Counter Reformation, the Gastein Protestants also met here for secret services. The cave has always served as natural winter quarters for various bat species. Guided tours (approx. 50 minutes) from Palm Sunday to the end of October.
Excursion destinations in Gastein: The castle ruins
Klammstein Castle, picturesquely situated on the towering Klammstein, has been watching over the entrance to the Gastein Valley since the 13th century. Mentioned for the first time in 1272, it was the administrative center and protective castle of the valley until it fell into disrepair in the 16th century. In 1972 the castle was extensively renovated and converted into a museum that provides information about the castle’s history and life in the Gastein Valley. A hearty snack by the wood fire is tempting in the castle tavern. Individual tours (open all year round, closed on Mondays) are offered.

Gastein excursions: Liechtensteinklamm – St. Johann
One of the longest and deepest gorges in the Alps – the mighty rush of the waterfall, the bog-covered stones in lush green. A legendary atmosphere and rays of sunshine that create a rainbow in the fine water dust. Often only a narrow strip of sky remains visible as the rocks move closer and closer together. We recommend sturdy shoes and, depending on the weather, warmer clothing for hiking over magical footbridges and bridges.
